Matric rage safety: a practical guide for parents
Practical advice from our South African team · Last reviewed October 2026
Matric rage is a big moment, and most matriculants come home with great memories. As a parent, it's natural to worry when you can't be there. This guide covers what to talk about before they go, and how to stay connected without hovering.
Before they go
- Agree on check-in times together.A short message at agreed times, such as late morning and before bed, feels supportive rather than controlling.
- Share the details.Get the accommodation address, the names and numbers of friends they are travelling with, and the event schedule.
- Save emergency numbers.Make sure their phone has 10111, 10177, 112, your number and a trusted adult nearby.
- Pack a power bank.A charged phone is their lifeline, so a power bank and charging cable should go everywhere with them.
At the festival
- Stick with a buddy.Agree that nobody leaves a venue alone, and that friends check on each other before going home.
- Watch drinks.Never leave a drink unattended or accept drinks from strangers. If someone feels unwell suddenly, get help straight away.
- Know where the help points are. Most events have medical and safety teams on site. Find them on arrival.
Getting home safely
- Plan transport in advance.Use official event shuttles or ride-hailing, and never get into a car with a driver who has been drinking.
- Agree on a code word.A simple word your child can send if they want to leave a situation, with no questions asked until later.
If you can't reach them
- Don't panic straight away.Phones die and signal drops at busy events. Try their friends first.
- Contact the accommodation or event safety teamif you still can't reach anyone.
- Know when to escalate. If you are worried about their safety and can't make contact, call 10111 or 112.
